In a bizarre story, a longtime officer with the Houston Police Department
has lost his job after an internal investigation revealed a bizarre pattern
of ticketing behavior. Essentially, the officer was mailing speeding tickets
to people without even pulling them over – in some cases, the drivers
who received these tickets claimed to be in entirely different cities
at the time of the alleged offense.
A Number of Disturbing Red Flags
The investigation into the ticketing issue revealed that not pulling the
drivers over was far from the only concerning behavior exhibited by this
officer. In fact, certain aspects of his alleged behavior actually put
others in danger.
- At least one ticketed individual was far outside of the area where he was
allegedly caught speeding.
- The tickets were sent to the registered owner of the car, not necessarily
- The officer claims to have paced one of the cars in his personal vehicle,
not a police cruiser.
Ultimately, this is a disturbing example of a police officer abusing their
discretionary authority, and the tickets were promptly dismissed by the
Houston Legal Department. The officer in question has been fired, and
has told the media that he has “no comment” in regard to the case.
